Case Studies

The latest in our series to answer the question 'why furniture?' we speak with designer and researcher Katryn Furmston, whose path into the furniture industry was anything but conventional, yet feels like a perfect fit. From early days spent immersed in DIY projects with her father, Katryn always had a creative spirit. Passionate about sustainability and human-centered design, Katryn is helping to shape a more thoughtful, circular future for the industry.

"I know many people don’t even consider the furniture that features in every part of their daily lives, and to me, this is fascinating! I’ve always enjoyed making things and often helped my dad with DIY projects. My parents often joke that our weekends were spent in Homebase!

However, I didn’t always want to work in the furniture industry. In fact, I initially wanted to be an engineer for a Formula 1 team, but unfortunately, my physics and chemistry skills aren’t up to the task.

Furniture design was a saving grace for me. I loved exploring all the creative possibilities during my undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and bringing my designs to life was the best part.

Entering the furniture industry was about creating something that people would interact with daily, something that brings them joy and comfort without them really noticing. However, my true passion lies in understanding why we discard our furniture and researching the relationships between people and their furnishings.

So why furniture? Well, I get to learn something new every day about what furniture means to those who use it and assist the industry in creating better, more sustainable pieces."
